Sustainability Goals

Sustainability Goals

Aim 1 - Net Zero Operations

BNECL aims to reach net zero in Green House Gases (GHG) emissions by 2040 or sooner. This aim speaks to the direct GHG emissions from the running of assets under our operational control, as well as the indirect emissions associated with the production of electricity and cooling to run those assets. This aim aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG #12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

Aim 2 - Net Zero Sales

The Group aims to reduce the carbon intensity of the energy products sold to net zero by 2040 or sooner. The carbon intensity is the GHG emissions from the energy products we sell per unit of energy (MJ) delivered. This aim aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #7 Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG #9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

Aim 3 - Invest in the Transition

Increase the amount of investment BNECL makes in its renewable and low carbon business streams. As the proportion of renewable energy solutions increases the proportion of investment made into these new business streams shall increase relative to our fossil fuel investment. This aim aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #7 Affordable and Clean energy, SDG #9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG# 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG #13 Climate Action.

Aim 4 - Incentivize and Empower Team Members

Motivate and reward our employees for embracing the new ethos of sustainability and advocating BNECL’s new thrust for net zero. This aim aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3 Good Health & Well Being and SDG #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Aim 5 - Improve the lives of Barbadians

Our ambition is to help the citizens of Barbados improve their resilience and achieve sustainable livelihoods. This aim aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #10 Reduced Inequalities and SDG #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Aim 6 - Promote Wellness Among Staff

To improve the physical health and mental wellness of our employees and by extension their families emphasizing proactive solutions to maintaining a healthy life and avoiding injury and/or illness. This aim aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3 Good Health & Well-Being.

Aim 7 - Transparency in Process

To prioritize sustainability in the energy transition process as Barbados strives to achieve 100% Renewable Energy (RE) generation and carbon neutrality by 2030 as per the Barbados National Energy Policy (BNEP). This aim aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #11Sustainable Cities and communities.

Aim 8 - Reduce National Waste

To reduce the amount of waste produced from our operations that enters the national waste streams. Included in this objective is to assist, wherever possible, in the reduction of waste from the general populace entering the national landfill system. This aim aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) #6 Clean water and sanitation and SDG #12- Responsible Consumption and production.

Aim 9 - Enhance Biodiversity and Environmental Stewardship

To actively protect, maintain and enhance the natural environment in and around the sites where BNECL operates. This includes implementing sustainable initiatives such as biogas and biodiesel projects that responsibly manage green waste reduce harmful methane emissions and lower overall carbon emission levels, by converting organic waste into renewable energy sources. This aim aligns with(SDG) #3 Good Health and Well-being, SDG #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG #12 Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG #13 Climate Action and SDG #15 Life on land.
