FIREMEN WERE CALLED to The Belle, St Michael, yesterday to deal with a Barbados National Energy Co. Ltd (BNECL) container truck that became over-pressurised.
Station officer of the Barbados Fire Service with responsibility for the Bridgetown Port, Kelan McCalla, said the call came at 12:21 p.m. from the health and safety officer at the BNECL. Nine officers and two appliances responded and provided safety coverage in the mitigation process. He said while rare, such a situation had happened before.
Group health and safety manager at BNECL, Damien Catlyn, said it was one of their liquefied natural gas (LNG) containers transporting LNG from the Bridgetown Port.
He could not say what was the exact pressure in the tank, but explained that any measurement above 110 PSI (pounds per square inch) would be problematic.
The pressure was brought down to below 60 PSI before the vehicle could safely move off.
“Following the required procedure, the truck was pulled off in a lightly populated area to reduce the pressure. Fire Service personnel were then contacted and the pressure was reduced safely. As a result, the container was transported to the BNECL in Woodbourne, St Philip,” Catlyn stated.
He said investigations were ongoing to ascertain the reason for the spike in pressure. (AJ)
