The clean-up operations following a recent oil spill in Oistins, Christ Church, are nearing completion, says Barbados National Energy Co Ltd’s (BNECL) group health and safety manager Damian Catlyn.
“The recovery of the oil was completed within the first day or day and a half. So what we’re doing is taking the opportunity to make sure everything is clean as we don’t want to take any chances. So we’ve gone above what was expected of us here in Oistins . . . . So even this in itself should greatly reduce any chance of flooding in the Oistins area in the near future,” he said.
The incident, which occurred two weeks ago – on June 6 – prompted a swift response from the BNECL team. Catlyn said that since then, the company had focused on thorough decontamination of the area’s drainage system to eliminate any lingering environmental risks.
