Understanding Your Bill

Understanding Your Bill

Below is a side-by-side look at the previous and new bill layouts. The numbers match the list that follows; letters in brackets (A–I) match common reference labels on customer materials.

Previous bill layout
Sample BNECL bill — previous layout (Tax Invoice). Use the numbered list to identify each section.
New bill layout
Sample BNECL bill — new layout with usage chart and payment stub. Use the numbered list to identify each section.

What each number means (both designs)

  1. Your account number (A) — Unique account identifier shown on the bill and payment stub. On the previous layout it appears in the blue summary area and the account/service strip; on the new layout it is shown prominently with your name.
  2. Service address / service location (B) — Where gas is supplied (premise). On the previous bill this is in the account and meter strip; on the new bill look for the Service Location line under your details.
  3. Billing (mailing) address (C) — Name and address the bill is issued to. This can differ from the service address. On the new layout it sits in the main customer block at the top left.
  4. Past payment summary (D)Previous bill: previous balance, payments or reversals, and balance forward. New bill: previous balance, discount reapplied, payments applied, and balance brought forward in the summary panel.
  5. Amounts due / balance forward (E) — What you owe and when. The previous design shows pay-by-due-date and late amounts in the blue summary box, plus balance forward in the charges block. The new design highlights Total Due By and Total If Paid By dates and amounts (including any credit balance in the sample).
  6. Usage details (F) — Service period, billing days, meter readings, multiplier and conversion factor, and consumption in cubic metres. The new bill adds a Usage per month bar chart so you can see consumption over the year.
  7. Messages and alerts (G) — Space for important notices (for example pending disconnection on the previous sample). The new bill includes the invoice period line and a dedicated gas emergency strip at the bottom (e.g. if you smell gas, call the 24-hour number).
  8. Itemised charges (H) — Breakdown such as gas supply, meter rental, fees or adjustments, VAT, and total current charges, leading to the amount to pay.
  9. Important information and payment stub (I) — The previous bill ends with a large Important Information panel for announcements and safety text. The new bill combines footer information with a detachable payment stub (below the dotted line) showing pay-by amounts and a box for the amount you pay.
